Canada Donates Most Money Per Capita to Haiti

27 01 2010

Canada/Haiti Pin

Here’s something I wanted to share with our readers.  This makes me very proud to be Canadian.  It turns out, Canadians have donated the most (per capita) towards the relief effort for Haiti.  I’m not sure how I fit into that equation since I donated $5 on my phone through a Canadian courier, however I also purchased a disc online and donated $10 through what I think was an American site.  Anyways, the numbers are in and thus far, Canada has shown it’s true colours.  They’re bright and promising.

Here’s an excerpt from 680 News:

“According to the Center for Global Development in Washington, D.C., Canada deserves a lead role in the reconstruction of Haiti.

David Roodman tells the Calgary Herald, per capita, Canadians have contributed more aid to the Caribbean nation that anyone else.

On average, we donate $5 per person, compared to the U.S. who has donated about $1 per person.

However, the United States still contributes more, overall.

Roodman says there’s a huge need for someone to coordinate all the aid money flowing to Haiti. Countries like Canada should be at the forefront, thanks to their experience in the impoverished nation.”

RED

Principal photography on the big screen adaptation of the DC Comics/Warren Ellis graphic novel has begun here in Toronto. Summit Entertainment’s spy-thriller “Red,” based on the DC Comics graphic novel of the same name by Warren Ellis. “Red” is the story of Frank Moses (Willis), a former black-ops CIA agent, who is now living a quiet life. That is, until the day a hi-tech assassin shows up intent on killing him. With his identity compromised and the life of the woman he cares for, Sarah (Parker), endangered, Frank reassembles his old team (Freeman, Malkovich and Mirren) in a last ditch effort to survive.

Brendan Fraser effed up-clap remix

27 01 2010

This is so bloody funny. Here’s what the creator had to say:”So this is the result of a couple beers, hearing Hollaback Girl on the radio while driving home, and pure boredness. I saw this clip of Brendan during the Golden Globes, and knew I had to make something out of it. I saw Brendan Fraser on Lopez Tonight, and seeing how he was able to laugh at himself, I figure he would laugh at this as well….hopefully. Enjoy!!”

‘Be Tough, Wear A Gun’ T-Shirt

27 01 2010

Be Tough : T-Shirt

This tee has been kicking around for a few years now, and I’ve always liked it.  Recently though I heard it was being sold at MoMA in NYC so I figured I would feature it here.  The design is super simple.  A gun tucked into the back of the tee.  It comes in a women’s and a male’s version in 4 sizes.  At about $50 a pop the retail price is super insane, but here’s to hoping for a sale.  P.S. When you run over to the Museum of Modern Art, be sure to check out the Tim Burton exhibit before it disappears on April 26th!

CarGo : Making The World Envious Of Copenhagen….Again

27 01 2010

Copenhagen is one of if not the world’s most cycle friendly cities. This is why the city now introduces; CarGo – a car shaped parking shelter for cargo bikes, made by Goodmorning Technology.

The number of cargo bikes in Copenhagen has increased dramatically over the past years. Today 6% of all Copenhagen households own at least one cargo bike – this adds up to more than 15 000 cargo bikes in our capital. But that´s the way Copenhagen likes it. The high number of cargo bikes reduces the need for more cars in a big city that is already struggling with crowded streets and pollution. However, the high number of cargo bikes results in an increased need for parking solutions that secure the bikes overnight and in bad weather.

The shell is made of fiberglass and is comprised of four separate cabins, each with room for one bike. This means that four bicycles can park in the space normally taken up by one car.

The ‘car’ has four solar powered ‘headlights’ that turn on after dark. In addition, a solar powered light turns on inside when one of the doors is opened. Hooks and a net are mounted on the walls of each cabin, for hanging up rain clothes and other gear.
